Аcylation of thiophenols with oxalylchloride leads to 2,3-thianaphthenequinones giving upon condensation with diaminomaleodinitrile the corresponding pyrazine-2,3-dicarbonitriles, which are easily cyclotetramerized upon melting to 2,3-thianaphthene-fused tetrapyrazinoporphyrazines.
